Filters as introductory concepts to topological spaces

Abstract

The introduction of topological spaces is proposed through the filters. Indeed, in this way both topology and limits theory are grounded on the same structure with an evident reduction of basic concepts. In the paper, the classical axiomatic Systems for the topological spaces are first introduced, with the main concepts of topology, then the definitions of limits are introduced, including the Moore-Smith convergence. Then the proposed pathway is introduced, starting from pre-orders, directed sets, and filters. Eventually, the most important concepts of topo¬logical spaces and limits theory are introduced on this basis.

La introducción de los espacios topológicos se propone empleando los filtros como conceptos claves. En realidad, de este modo la topología y la teoría de los límites están basadas en la misma estructura con una reducción evidente de conceptos básicos. En este artículo, los sistemas axiomáticos clásicos para los espacios topológicos se introducen primero, con los conceptos principales de topología, luego se presentan las definiciones de límites, incluyendo la convergéncia de Moore-Smith. Luego proponemos el camino a seguir, empezando con pre-órdenes, conjuntos dirigidos, y filtros. Al final, sobre esta base se presentan los conceptos más importantes de topología y de límites.
