The concrete made with portland cement is one of the most used materials by humanity, its properties are very suitable for construction, so they can meet the infrastructure needs that every society requires. It is possible to emphasize some of its properties like its low cost, since it exists in abundance, in addition it has a great versatility and capacity of manipulation, thanks to which it can take almost any form in which it is emptied, in addition to the property to harden under the water, being adapted for works of hydraulic character. However, beyond the good properties that concrete made with portland cement offers, there are serious issues that in these times should be paid more attention, such as energy consumption in its production and CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, as can be verified in the portal of MINEM Peru. This portal points out that for every ton(t) of cement produced, 0.75t of CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere. Due to this, the production of portland cement is responsible for 8% of the emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and therefore it is among the most contaminating industries that human activity develops, preceded by the energy industry; in addition, there are serious problems related to the durability of concrete, there are many factors that can affect it and reduce the time of service. For the exposed thing it is verified that alternatives to the ordinary portland cement (CPO) are required; in this way of search of alternative binders, several types of binders exist, in a line those that are based on the raw materials that when reacting in aqueous means form the resistant gel C-S-H, as they are it the binders of lime-puzzola and related, in another line are had to the alkaline, belitic, sulfobelitic cements, etc, which are based on the reaction of silicoaluminous materials in the presence of strongly alkaline aqueous media. The first type of these conglomerating materials has silica (SiO2) components, coming from pozzolans and lime (CaO), which react in an aqueous medium forming calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H resistant gel), so in theory these elements react in a similar way to CPO. The second type of binders began with the research on alkaline cements that date from the 50's, to date it is positioned as a clear alternative to CPO; Basically the mechanism comes given by the property of dissolution of the amorphous silica in strongly alkaline means (PH>12-13), then when giving itself the activation thanks to superior temperatures to 60cº and humidity greater to 90%, forms a resistant gel that agglomerates the mixture, one of the main ones is the N-A-S-H, that is the equivalent to the C-S-H in the other types of conglomerates, nevertheless its genesis and the mineralogical structure is very different. Thus, there are alternatives to CPO and it is the responsibility of the industry to generate changes that will lead to a more sustainable activity and thus contribute to the efforts of humanity to curb environmental pollution.
