The present research thesis evaluated the reduction of nitrate production in the continuous flow series slow sand filter system. The development of this research was carried out in the facilities of the Wastewater Research Center CITRAR-FIA-UNI. The series slow sand filter system consisted of two continuous flow filtration units. These units operated with the same design characteristics, but with different filter media particle sizes. The effective media sizes of the first and second slow sand filters were 1.51 mm and 1.1 mm, respectively. During the development of the investigation, three filtration runs were carried out; in each filtration run, the filtration surface rate was varied. The surface rates were 0.0157 m3/m2.h, 0.0104 m3/m2.h and 0.00524 m3/m2.h during the first, second and third filtration runs, respectively. The influent from the SSF system was collected after the pretreatment system of the CITRAR-FIA-UNI WWTP, to be stored in a pre-sedimentation tank. At the outlet of this tank was located the equalizer tank, which was in contact with the environment, allowing the aeration and oxidation of the nitrites present in the pre- treated domestic wastewater, thus generating an increase in the concentration of nitrates. In the inner part of the continuous flow FLA filter media there was an anaerobic process and in the superficial part an aerobic process. In the latter part, a biological layer was formed by microorganisms, including algae. These algae in the photosynthesis process assimilated the nitrates present in the wastewater and as the surface filtration rate decreased, the SSF system improved its nitrate production reduction capacity. The average percentage of nitrate production reduction in the continuous flow slow sand filter system during the first, second and third filtration runs was 76.4%, 77.6% and 80.9%, with surface rates of 0.0157 m3/m2. h, 0.0104 m3/m2. h and 0.00524 m3/m2. h, respectively.en
