Currently, industrial effluents harm water bodies due to the little treatment they have before being discharged to the sewer. The textile industry is one of the manufactures with high water consumption and due to the various chemical inputs, that are used, it generates wastewaters with highly varied pollutant loads, most of the colored wastewaters being from the dyeing process. Advanced oxidation processes are an alternative treatment for these dyeing wastewaters. This work applied the electro-oxidation method with titanium and titanium coated with ruthenium and iridium mesh electrodes for the discoloration of the simulated and real dyeing wastewaters of the cotton dyeing processes with reactive dyes, to be reused in new dyeing processes. The effluents of commercial reactive dyes tested were: simulated red wastewater (C. I. reactive red 195) with 300 mg / L of dye concentration, 50 g / L of NaCl and pH ≈ 10; and the real wastewater (C. I. reactive red 195, C. I. reactive yellow 176 and C.I. reactive blue 221), prepared at 3% dye concentration (1% of each dye), contained 50 g / L of NaCl and pH ≈ 10.The tests at the laboratory level were carried out in two kinds of reactors, one compartment and a double compartment divided by exchange membrane, to compare the performance in the decolorization of simulated and real dyeing wastewater, the tests were carried out at a density of current of 1 A/dm2 for 30 minutes and exchange area of 0.5 dm2. The highest efficiency in decolorizing the synthetic wastewater was from the two-compartment reactor divided by a membrane, the decolorization efficiency being 95.9% and 85.4%, respectively. Then the pilot tests with a two-compartment batch reactor were made on the simulated and real wastewater. The real wastewater at a current density of 2.78 A/dm2 for 210 minutes, an exchange area of 0.36 dm2, and a volume of 7 L achieved a discoloration of 99.1%. The discoloration was evaluated by UV-visible spectrophotometry and during the electro-oxidation process the pH, chlorine content and dye concentration were monitored. The treated effluent has a yellow color and suspended solids, so it was filtered previously to its evaluation for reuse in new dyeing, giving acceptable values of color deviation in the dyed substrate.
