This investigation displays the application of the vertical flow artificial wetlands as an alternative for the treatment of effluent Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket. This technology provides advantages such as requiring less installation area than lakes and horizontal flow wetlands, the low construction costs, operation and maintenance allow it to be an appropriate alternative for rural and peri-urban areas. The operating principle of this system is to promote the aerobic process inside from natural ventilation through power intermittency and rest of reactors, and the entry of air through the vent pipes. On the other hand, this technology has characteristics of design and stated yields for other countries where conditions are different, for this reason, the intention is to find out what is the best performance for the operation of the vertical wetlands under these conditions. The methodology of this study consisted in implementing two reactors type Wetland Artificial of Vertical Flow, in which one of them contained two units of the Chrysopogon Zizanioides plant and the other didn’t contain vegetables. The Vertical Wetlands contain one bed of solids that consists in three-layer of substratum of different sizes or granulometries that will be accommodated uniformly one on top of other. In the superficial part is placed 50 cm height of thick sand, in the intermediate part 15 cm gravel of 3-10mm and in the underneath part gravel 15cm of 20-40mm. At the superior part of the wetland are supported the pipelines of distribution and in the bottom are collocated a drainage pipelines that will ends in a vertical pipeline, called pipeline of vent. The pipelines of drainage will allow gather the treated water. So, the wastewater to be treated pass through a pre-treatment and then reach the UASB of the Treatment Plant of CITRAR-UNI, an amount of effluent of these last reactor will be directed towards to the Vertical Wetlands, here will download in times of intermittency of 24, 12, 6 and 4 hours. The reactor efficiency has been evaluated at each stage for remove the Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total Suspended Solids, Total Nitrogen and behavior of the basic parameters such as temperature, turbidity, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, environmental temperature, relative humidity and plant growth. In this way, the system showed that the best efficiency was developed in the HV 1 reactor at the intermittency period of 6 HOURS under these conditions the reactor reached a removal percentage of 96.23%, 90.63% and 87.18% in the parameters BOD, COD and TSS.
